Beyond Embroidery: The Human Stories Behind Every Chikankari Creation
One of the most important lessons I have learnt while building Manjari, our Lucknowi Chikankari brand, is that the work is never just about fabric, embroidery, orders, or sales.
Behind every handcrafted piece is a human being with a story.
When people admire a beautifully embroidered Chikankari saree or kurta, they often see the craftsmanship, the elegance, and the heritage it represents. What they do not always see are the skilled artisans whose hands bring that beauty to life and the lives they lead beyond their craft.
Recently, one of our lead artisans underwent a dental surgery that unfortunately did not go as planned. Seeing her in pain, I accompanied her to my own dentist and ensured that she received the medical attention and intervention she needed.
Moments like these remind me that our responsibility as business owners extends far beyond production schedules and delivery timelines.
But support is not always medical.
Over the years, I have listened to stories of family struggles, concerns about children's education, health challenges, financial anxieties, and countless everyday difficulties. At different times, I have found myself becoming an advisor, counsellor, mediator, and even an "agony aunt" before becoming a business owner.
Working closely with artisans teaches you a valuable lesson: leadership is not about managing people. It is about caring for people.
In a world increasingly focused on scale, efficiency, and growth metrics, there is another measure of success that rarely appears on a balance sheet—the trust people place in you during their most difficult moments.
The satisfaction of seeing an artisan recover, smile again, and return to her craft with confidence and dignity is priceless.
Every Chikankari garment we create at Manjari carries more than the beauty of Lucknow's rich embroidery tradition. It carries the strength, resilience, dedication, and humanity of the women behind every stitch.
Their skill preserves a centuries-old heritage. Their stories remind us that craftsmanship is ultimately about people.
Businesses may be built on transactions.
Communities are built on compassion.
And at Manjari, we believe that preserving the art of Lucknavi Chikankari begins with valuing the people who keep that art alive.
